Our cultural journey continued this June with a vibrant and joyful celebration of African and African American cultures. This week, we focused on the traditions of West Africa, Zambia, and Ethiopia, and introduced our students to the beauty, history, and creativity found across the African continent.
The classroom was transformed into a colorful, rhythmic, and sensory-rich environment that brought these cultures to life through hands-on learning.
One of the most memorable moments was a family-style Ethiopian lunch. Children sat together on the floor, gathered around a large shared tray lined with injera bread, enjoying traditionally prepared stews, vegetables, and meats. This communal experience taught children not only about new flavors, but also about the cultural importance of sharing meals and eating together.

Students tried on traditional African outfits and explored artisan fabrics, learning about patterns, colors, and the stories behind the textiles. With the help of our wonderful teachers and parent contributions, children admired the craftsmanship and cultural pride reflected in each piece.

We got creative with beadwork, a beloved tradition across many African cultures. The kids made necklaces and decorated art pieces with beads, learning about symbolism, patterns, and personal expression. Some of our students even had their hair beaded by our talented staff—resulting in proud smiles and lots of excitement!

Music and rhythm filled the air as students made their own djembe drums, explored West African music, and danced to the beat of traditional songs. These joyful activities had everyone moving and clapping along.

This week offered a meaningful chance to celebrate African heritage and African American identity, through food, music, fashion, and art. It was also an opportunity to honor the families in our community who share these roots and continue to enrich our daycare with their culture and traditions.
We’re so grateful to all the families who sent in clothing, photos, and cultural items to share with our classrooms. Your involvement helps create unforgettable learning experiences and fosters curiosity, empathy, and pride in every child.
